China-Europe Freight Train Operation Updates: Fluctuations in Transit Time and Freight Rates

In the 26th week of China-Europe freight train operations, there have been notable updates in transit time and freight rates. Let's delve into the latest developments across different routes.

Transit Time Updates:

Compared to the previous week, there have been significant improvements in transit time for China-Europe freight trains. At Alashankou, the waiting time has notably reduced, and the reloading now takes an average of 6 days. However, at Khorgos, the average reloading time has extended to 2 weeks, with some cases taking nearly 20 days. On the other hand, Manzhouli and Erenhot are now experiencing a significant decline in handling time, averaging 11-14 days compared to the previous week.

Europe-Bound Routes:

Overall, the service on Europe-bound routes remains stable. Taking Chengdu as an example, the average transit time (T/T) from Chengdu to Malaszewicze is 13 days, while it takes approximately 23 days to reach Hamburg. Additionally, the average T/T from Khorgos to Duisburg is 18 days. For the Russian-bound direction, the average T/T from Zengcheng, Datian, Wuhan, and other cities to Moscow ranges from 13 to 15 days, with the longest delay recorded at 29 days.

Central Asia Route:

Experience swift and efficient transportation from Xi'an to Almaty in Central Asia with a transit time of just 9 days after departing from China via the Khorgos port.

Freight Rates:

Let's explore the freight rates for the week across different routes.

Europe-Bound Routes:

In July, the overall supply and demand of spaces remained stable. However, slight adjustments were made to the ordering prices at platforms. Terminals like Chengdu, Zhengzhou, Yiwu, and Jinhua maintained stable prices. Wuhan and Chongqing have implemented price reductions ranging from approximately $100 to $400, providing cost-saving opportunities for businesses. On the other hand, Xi'an Free Trade Port is expected to increase prices by an estimated $50-$100. Trains from Xi'an to Duisburg, Hamburg, and Budapest enjoy stable schedules, prices, and high demand.

East-Bound Service:

Due to a reduction in plans, the supply of spaces for the east-bound service is currently tight, leading to an overall price increase approaching saturation. Booking prices at platforms such as Chongqing, Xi'an, and Wuhan have experienced varying degrees of climb, with a maximum increase of 20%. Notably, spaces at Yiwu have already sold out for the month of July, and bookings are now open exclusively for August.

Russian Route:

The overall supply of spaces on the Russian route is sufficient. The market has gradually returned to order, and the intense price competition from the past has subsided. Booking prices across the majority of platforms have surpassed the $4000 mark, while spot freight rates typically fall within the range of $6000 to $6500. However, due to rising rental box prices, spot freight rates may still experience an expected increase of 3% to 5%.

Central Asia Route:

After a period of tightening, positions on the Central Asia route have become relatively sufficient in the near future. However, there is an overall upward trend in freight rates. In July, there was no fluctuation in the prices of positions in Chongqing and Hefei, while the schedule and prices in Chengdu are yet to be announced. Platforms like Jinhua, Yiwu, and Zhengzhou have seen price increases of 5000 to 6000 yuan, and the overall price increase for public trains in Xi'an is about 5000 yuan.

Chinese Domestic Transportation Costs:

In the 26th week, domestic transportation costs have not experienced significant fluctuations. However, apart from the European container rental market, many regions in Central Asia and Russia are facing container shortages, leading to a "price growth" trend. The rental price for inbound containers from Almaty has increased, while the outbound price has risen by $50 to $100.
